Anyone who knows Ervin Somogyi’s work will immediately recognize this Modified Dreadnought (Mod-D) design. It’s a large-bodied instrument with a dreadnought-esque profile. The waist is nipped in the manner of a classical and shifted further forward compared to a standard dreadnought. Because the waist is higher up on the instrument, shifting its center of gravity and making it easier to balance and providing the player with a more comfortable playing position.
The Mod-D has the same air volume as the standard dreadnought. Its body size shines the most in ensemble settings, where power and focus of tone are required to be heard among other instruments. This potential for power and clarity has made the Mod-D guitar the preferred choice of bluegrass guitarists.
This innovative model remains a mainstay of artists who require acoustic volume without compromising the quality of higher frequencies.
