I’m incredibly honored to announce that Buendia Guitars will be exhibiting at the 3rd annual LaConner Guitar Festival. Save the dates and come join me at table #6 of this fantastic guitar show in the heart of “The Evergreen State”, showcasing some of the most incredible builders from all over the world.

May 10th, 11th & 12th, 2019 – At Maple Hall – 104 Commercial. La Conner, Washington 98257

Tim Farrell will be performing my guitars at the Maple Hall on Saturday, May 11th from 1:00 to 1:30 pm.

Tony McManus and Julia Toaspern will be performing my guitars at the Sips Wine Bar on Saturday, May 11th from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

“Nestled on the bank of the Swinomish Channel at the edge of the idyllic farm lands of the Skagit Valley in the great state of Washington, the town of La Conner has been host to some of the world’s famous artists, poets, and authors. With such a history steeped in the arts, we couldn’t think of a better place to showcase the Art of Lutherie with some of the finest luthiers in the world.

There is a small but thriving, tight-knit community of guitar builders across the globe.  These are artisans who are committed to building the finest instruments.  Attention to every detail in tone and finish is an obsession for these luthiers.  It’s a labor of love for them.  They truly are artists in every sense of the word.  There are a handful of festivals for them across the country, these festivals are your opportunity to meet the luthiers, play the guitars, and find your perfect guitar. Until you’ve played these instruments you really won’t appreciate the difference an incredibly well crafted musical instrument can make to your playing, and your enjoyment of playing. It’s like falling in love.  For musicians there is an emotional connection to their instrument, with a handmade guitar the connection extends to its maker!” (“LaConner Guitar Festival Site”).

MY APPRENTICESHIP IS OVER – Thanks to Ervin Somogyi

September 30th, 2015

From the beginning, I knew that belonging to the family of Ervin Somogyi’s apprentices would mean being in the hands of one of the best guitar makers that the field can offer. The whole team made me feel at home, setting the stage for a gratifying and motivating experience.

The quality of apprenticeship that I received was exceptional. The high level of craftsmanship, experience, and wisdom found in Ervin’s shop allowed me to learn all aspects of the construction of such a complex instrument in a remarkably simple and fluid way. I attribute this to Ervin’s natural inclination toward teaching as well as a generous willingness to answer my questions and be available to help me whenever needs arose.

My apprenticeship gave me theoretic and practical experience in the aesthetic design and the sounding of guitars. In Ervin’s shop, theory and practice happen under the same roof, which helped me quickly gain confidence when it came time to customize my own instruments. One of the things that fascinated me the most from the beginning was the process of learning to voice a guitar. Because my background had been with playing and building classical guitars, in Ervin’s work I immediately recognized and appreciated a sound quality similar to that of my roots. I knew that I was in the right place.

One of the most nourishing parts of my apprenticeship was the exchange of knowledge and experience that occurred with my apprentice peers Gustav Fredell, Hiroshi Ogino and Julian Gaffney. I will look back at these years with the love and fondness in my heart that I have for each of them. I have special respect and admiration for Chris Morimoto, who was with me in the shop from my first days to the last. I give profound thanks to the limitless generosity he showed me, and any success I have, I owe in part to Chris.

And of course, I give thanks to Ervin for giving me this opportunity to apprentice to him. At the close of these 3 years and three months, I begin to see how patiently he let me flounder, experiment and grow. In his shop, I found a home in the world that I will take with me wherever I go. There is no greater gift. My only hope is that I can honor him with every guitar I make.
